New Eastern Green Link 2 visitor cabin opens in East Yorkshire

Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2) has opened a new visitor cabin near Market Weighton. Located next to EGL2’s main cable construction office, the cabin provides a local space where visitors can learn more about the project, its construction and the people helping to deliver it.

Neil Lyons, National Grid Project Director for EGL2, officially opened the cabin alongside project partners Prysmian and Balfour Beatty. Prysmian is responsible for designing, manufacturing and installing EGL2’s 505km cable, with Balfour Beatty delivering the onshore underground cable works.

Delivering EGL2 is about more than building new infrastructure. Together with our contractor partner, Prysmian, supported by Balfour Beatty, EGL2 is also working to deliver benefits for communities along the route, including through education, skills and wider social value.

The new visitor cabin is one way we can bring that work closer to local communities. The cabin will support EGL2’s work with schools, colleges and young people, creating another space to learn about the project and explore STEM subjects and careers.

Neil Lyons, National Grid Project Director for EGL2, said:

“The visitor cabin gives us another place where we can welcome people in and talk to them about EGL2 and the work happening in their local area.

“It also reflects the wider commitment we share with our contractor partners to make sure the project delivers benefits beyond the infrastructure we are building. Whether that’s supporting education, developing skills or inspiring young people to think about a future career in our industry, we want EGL2 to have a positive impact in the communities where we are working.

“It’s great to see the cabin open and I’m looking forward to seeing people make use of it.”

Giuseppe Cardamone, Prysmian EGL2 Project Director, said:

“The opening of the visitor cabin is an exciting milestone for the project. We want to create opportunities for local schools and young people to learn more about EGL2 on site, discover the range of careers involved in delivering major infrastructure and feel excited about the work taking place in their local area.”

Brendan Maloney, Balfour Beatty Project Director, added:

" At Balfour Beatty, community engagement is a really important part of how we want to deliver EGL2. The visitor cabin gives us a dedicated space where we can welcome local people, listen to their views and share more about what we are delivering.

"We believe major infrastructure projects should leave a positive legacy in the communities in which we work and, by working collaboratively with National Grid and Prysmian, we want to make sure we maximise those opportunities throughout the life of the project.”

Almost a year of welcoming visitors

The opening comes as the project approaches the first anniversary of the main EGL2 Yorkshire Visitor Hub at Wren Hall, near Drax in Yorkshire.

Since opening, the hub has recorded more than 11,000 visitor hours, welcoming everyone from children as young as seven through to university students.

Our commitment to education and skills extends beyond our visitor facilities too. EGL2 and its contractor partners continue to support STEM and careers activities, helping young people learn more about the opportunities available across construction, engineering and the energy sector.

In September, members of the project team attended the Hull and East Riding Apprenticeship Fair at Bishop Burton College, which welcomed more than 2,250 students. EGL2 was joined by Balfour Beatty and BAM, giving young people the opportunity to hear more about careers in the sector and the range of skills involved in delivering major infrastructure projects.
