EGL2 team attend successful ‘Engage with Engineers’ event in Peterhead

On Saturday 10 May, the Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2) team attended the 'Engage with Engineers' event hosted by the 2nd Battalion The Highlanders Army Cadet Force (ACF) in Boddam, near Peterhead, with the goal of inspiring the next generation of engineers.
The EGL2 team in conjunction with SSEN Transmission who are delivering the project in a joint venture with National Grid Electricity Transmission, were among 25 companies in attendance and they showcased an engaging stand focused on opportunities in the energy sector. The event was a great success, attracting over 120 attendees and receiving highly positive feedback.
Events like this allow EGL2 to engage with young people about careers in the renewable energy industry and answer questions about the project. This is particularly important in Boddam and Peterhead, where the Peterhead Convertor Station is being constructed and where the planned marine cable route will make landfall.
The event’s organiser, Major Stuart Eddie of 2nd Battalion The Highlanders ACF, echoed the importance of encouraging future engineers:
“The energy sector in north-east Scotland is a big sector for us, and it’s moving into a new era. I think it’s really important to start looking at future workforce and where it’s going to come from. You need to start building that interest now. It’s important for people to come along, it’s important for [EGL2] as an employer, as these youngsters are going to be your future workers’’.
Gillian Doig, Community Liaison Manager for EGL2, said there was a lot of interest in energy sector opportunities at the event:
“We were proud to stand alongside other local organisations who shared our goal of connecting with young people around the career opportunities on their doorstep. The students left with an understanding of why clean energy projects like EGL2 are so critical, the benefits they can bring to the local area in terms of skills and jobs, and hopefully they felt inspired to study engineering or take up an apprenticeship and return to their hometown for work. We were delighted to accept the invitation to attend this event at Boddam Army Cadet Centre.”
