EGL2 team inspires future energy professionals at the Great Yorkshire Show

Volunteers from Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2) joined colleagues from across National Grid at this year’s Great Yorkshire Show, helping to inspire thousands of visitors to learn more about careers in energy, science, engineering and technology. National Grid hosted a stand in the Discovery Zone for the Great Yorkshire Show, an area dedicated to innovation, science and future careers. 

Over the four-day event, volunteers welcomed visitors to the stand, shared insights into their careers and explained the wide range of opportunities available within the energy sector. Team members spoke to young people, school groups, parents, teachers and members of the public about the skills needed to work in the industry, career pathways into National Grid and the important role energy infrastructure plays in supporting the UK's future.  

Visitors were able to take part in a range of interactive activities, including a virtual reality pylon-climbing experience, circuit-building challenges and a ‘Build Your Own Great Grid Upgrade’ game, helping bring energy and engineering careers to life in a fun and engaging way.  

The stand also provided an opportunity for volunteers from EGL2 and different National Grid projects to come together and showcase the breadth of skills, roles and experiences involved in delivering major infrastructure projects across the UK. By sharing their personal career journeys and day-to-day experiences, volunteers helped demonstrate that careers in energy extend far beyond traditional engineering roles, spanning everything from engineering and project management to digital, environmental, planning and commercial disciplines.

This year the Great Yorkshire Show is expected to have attracted more than 150,000 visitors. It celebrates the very best of agriculture, food, countryside living and rural industries. EGL2’s support with the stand forms part of its wider commitment to promoting STEM education, developing future skills and supporting communities.
