New collaboration office opens for EGL2 onshore cable construction in East Yorkshire

EGL2 staff at the P2 opening

A new office has opened near Market Weighton to support construction of the onshore cable route for Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2). The new office brings together the project team and its supply chain partners to support collaborative working as construction progresses.

The office, located south of Market Weighton, will act as the main construction base for the 68 km onshore cable route in England. It provides a central location for day‑to‑day construction management and coordination as work progresses along the cable route. In total, the site comprises around 27 cabin units, along with parking for approximately 90 vehicles.

EGL2 is being delivered by National Grid Electricity Transmission and SSEN Transmission, with Prysmian responsible for designing, manufacturing and installing the 505 km cable. Balfour Beatty is supporting Prysmian by delivering the onshore underground cable works. The new office reflects the project’s collaborative, partnership-led approach.

Speaking about the opening of the new office, Neil Lyons, EGL2 Project Director for National Grid, said:

“This new office plays an important role in bringing the project and contractor teams together in one place. Collaborative working is essential to delivering the onshore cable route safely and efficiently. Having a shared base close to the works helps us maintain high safety standards, plan effectively and manage construction in a way that is mindful of local communities.”

The 68 km onshore cable route forms a key part of EGL2, running from the landfall point at Fraisthorpe to the new converter station at Drax.

The onshore cable will be installed underground and construction activities include cable installation, jointing, and reinstatement of land. The new office will support planning, logistics and coordination across multiple work sites, helping teams manage construction safely and minimise disruption where possible.

Giuseppe Cardamone, Prysmian EGL2 Project Director, said:

“The opening of the Collaboration Office represents an important milestone in the ongoing collaboration between EGL2, Prysmian and Balfour Beatty. We are proud of what has been achieved and are excited about the opportunities ahead as we continue to deliver success together as part of the project.”

Brendan Maloney, Balfour Beatty EGL2 Project Director, added:

“The opening of the shared Collaboration Office represents an important milestone for the project, providing EGL2, Prysmian and Balfour Beatty with a dedicated space to work together and deliver the project collaboratively.

The arrival of the Collaboration Office is also a moment to recognise the significant effort that has gone into making it a reality. Facilities like this do not appear overnight; they are the result of careful planning, coordination and strong teamwork across the project.”

EGL2 will connect Peterhead in Scotland to Drax in North Yorkshire via a new high voltage direct current (HVDC) subsea and underground cable. The project will play a vital role in strengthening the electricity network and supporting the UK’s transition to cleaner, more secure energy.

Further information about construction activity and how communities can stay informed is available on the EGL2 website.
