EGL2 Wren Hall site recognised for outstanding standards
Last week the Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2) Wren Hall Converter Station site received a silver award at the Considerate Constructors Awards in Manchester.
The EGL2 main construction works contractor at the Wren Hall site, BAM, achieved an excellent result at its latest Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) inspection, scoring the maximum 45 out of 45 across community, environment and workforce categories. Inspectors highlighted how everyday behaviours on site are delivering real benefits for local people, the environment and the workforce, alongside strong examples of innovation and good practice in construction delivery.
This outstanding performance led to the BAM team receiving a Silver Site Award at the CCS National Awards this week. Community engagement was recognised as a particular strength which occurs collaboratively between EGL2 and its contractor partners, including regular newsletters, advance notice of potentially disruptive works and ongoing dialogue through Community Liaison Group meetings. The inspection also highlighted the project’s visitor hub, which is now open and has already welcomed a number of local schools and colleges.
The inspection also praised environmental management and workforce welfare standards, including protections for local watercourses, the use of HVO fuel to reduce emissions, a commitment to delivering at least a ten percent biodiversity net gain, and high‑quality facilities and wellbeing support for those working on site.
Neil Lyons, EGL2 Project Director for National Grid said:
“This result reflects the pride our teams and partners take in doing the right thing every day for local communities, for the environment and for everyone working on the project. Seeing BAM, our main construction works contractor at Wren Hall, recognised with a silver site award is a real testament to the collaborative approach we are taking across EGL2. From opening our visitor hub to welcome schools and colleges, to setting high standards on site, we are committed to delivering this nationally significant project responsibly and leaving a positive legacy for the area.”
Andy Taylor, Senior Project Manager at Wren Hall for BAM added:
“This award is a real credit to the whole team at Wren Hall and to the strong partnerships we have within the EGL2 project. We place a strong emphasis on being good neighbours, protecting the environment and making sure our workforce feels supported and valued. It is great to see that approach recognised at a national level.”
