A cleaner future – onshore and offshore – for EGL2

More than 50 volunteers from SSEN Transmission, National Grid, and their contract partners for the Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2) project rolled up their sleeves last week to take part in a hugely successful simultaneous beach clean at either end of the UK’s biggest ever electricity transmission project.

Beach cleans took place at Sandford Bay in Aberdeenshire and Fraisthorpe in the East Riding of Yorkshire, with the 50+ strong team - working in the sunshine – managing to remove more than five tonnes of rubbish from the coastline.

Following on from a similar clean-up at Sandford Bay last year, last week’s effort is the latest in a series of environmental initiatives by the EGL2 project, demonstrating the team’s continued commitment to making a positive difference in the communities where it operates.

Partnership in action
The day was made possible thanks to strong collaboration across the EGL2 joint venture team and its supply chain partners. BAM, David Smith Contractors, Prysmian and Balfour Beatty provided on-the-ground support to ensure the smooth running of the event.

The group at Sandford Bay was again joined by Dr Lauren Smith from the East Grampian Coastal Partnership, who praised EGL2’s ongoing dedication to protecting Sandford Bay and the wider coastal environment:

I was absolutely delighted to join the EGL2 team again this year for their clean-up of Sandford Bay, all of the volunteers put in an excellent effort and are committed to improving the Bay by removing the accumulating litter for the benefit of both the community and wildlife.

A positive local impact
Speaking after the event, EGL2’s Project Director, Fionán Doonan said:
“We are committed to looking after the communities that we work and operate in and clearing more than five tonnes of rubbish from the beaches at either end of the EGL2 project is a fantastic achievement.

Just as important, though, was the opportunity for our project teams and contract partners to come together outdoors, away from screens, and contribute to something that has a lasting benefit for the local environment. I’m already looking forward to next year’s beach clean!”
